Altcoin Season Index

Is it altcoin season? This index counts how many of the 50 most traded coins on the Bybit exchange beat bitcoin over the last 90 days, using real daily prices. It is our own computation of the idea behind the Blockchaincenter and CoinMarketCap indexes, and it shows every coin behind every number.

How this altcoin season index works

Blockchaincenter's altcoin season index puts the rule this way: "If 75% of the Top 50 coins performed better than Bitcoin over the last season (90 days) it is Altcoin Season." CoinMarketCap runs a version with the top 100 coins and adds the other end: "If only 25% or fewer outperform Bitcoin, it's Bitcoin Season." Both start from a list of top coins, Blockchaincenter's top 50 and the top 100 ranked on CoinMarketCap, and leave out stablecoins and asset-backed tokens such as WBTC.

This page builds its own version from exchange prices alone. Each day it takes the 50 coins with the most trading on Bybit's spot market over the previous 90 days, in USDT, checks whether each coin's price change over the window beat bitcoin's, and reports the share that did, from 0 to 100. Left out are 11 pegged tokens whose price barely moves (stablecoins), 11 tokens Bybit lists as tokenized stocks, the gold-backed XAUT, and BBSOL, METH, STETH and WBTC, whose prices follow bitcoin, ether or solana almost exactly. Ether counts as an altcoin, as it does for CoinMarketCap.

Switch between the 90-day season, the 30-day month and the 365-day year, pick any month end since 2022, and point at a bar to see which coin it is. The history chart shows every day, and the table under it lists every altcoin season.

Is it altcoin season now?

Not by this measure. On September 25, 2026, the last day in the data, the 90-day index read 60: 30 of the 50 coins beat bitcoin, which rose 40.1% from June 27, 2026, closing at $84,097.60. That is neither season, though it had climbed from 30 on September 16, 2026. The strongest coins were ENA +248.6%, UNI +229.3% and PUMP +210.1%; the weakest, SLX, fell 86.7%.

The shorter and longer windows disagree. The 30-day index read 74, one step short of altcoin season, with bitcoin up 6.4% over the month. The 365-day index read 22, bitcoin season: bitcoin was 22.8% lower than a year earlier, and the median coin was down 43.5%.

How rare altcoin season was

From March 1, 2022, the first day this version can be computed, to September 25, 2026, the 90-day index was at 75 or above on 66 of 1,670 days (4.0%), in 9 separate stretches in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The longest ran 24 days, from August 23 to September 15, 2022, and reached 100 on September 10, 2022, when all 50 coins beat bitcoin. Bitcoin season was far more common: 670 days (40.1%), with the longest stretch lasting 100 days, from April 20 to July 28, 2023. The 365-day version never reached 75; its highest reading was 54, on October 19, 2024.

Altcoin season is about beating bitcoin, not about rising

The index compares every coin with bitcoin, so it can read high in a falling market. Of the 66 altcoin season days on the 90-day index, 34 came when bitcoin was lower than 90 days before. On August 31, 2022, for example, bitcoin was 34.2% lower than 90 days earlier. Of the 50 coins, 44 beat it, and 33 of those had fallen too, only by less. The low end works the same way: of the 670 bitcoin season days, 465 came when bitcoin was also lower than 90 days before, and most coins had fallen further. A reading of 60 says that 30 coins did better than bitcoin, not that they made money.

Why the number differs from other sites

For ether alone, the ETH/BTC ratio chart tracks it against bitcoin day by day. The bitcoin monthly returns heatmap covers ether, XRP, solana and other coins month by month, and the bitcoin RSI chart shows momentum on the same kind of data.

Educational, not financial advice. The index describes which coins beat bitcoin in the past. It does not predict the next move or recommend buying or selling any coin.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it altcoin season right now?

Not in this data. On September 25, 2026 the 90-day index read 60, neither season: 30 of the 50 most traded coins on Bybit beat bitcoin over 90 days. Altcoin season needs 75 or more.

What is the altcoin season index?

A number from 0 to 100 that shows what share of a set of large coins did better than bitcoin over a recent window, usually 90 days. At 75 or above it is called altcoin season, at 25 or below bitcoin season. This page computes its own version from real Bybit prices.

How is this index different from Blockchaincenter or CoinMarketCap?

Blockchaincenter uses a top 50 and CoinMarketCap the top 100 coins ranked on its own site. This version ranks coins by trading volume on Bybit's spot market and uses only Bybit prices, so its readings can differ from theirs on the same day.

How long does altcoin season last?

Not long in this data. From March 2022 to September 2026 the 90-day index spent 66 days at 75 or above, split into 9 stretches. The longest lasted 24 days, in August and September 2022.

What is bitcoin season?

The opposite reading: 25 or below, when three quarters or more of the counted coins did worse than bitcoin. On the 90-day index it covered 670 of 1,670 days in this data, and the longest stretch ran 100 days in 2023.

Does altcoin season mean altcoins are going up?

No. It means most coins did better than bitcoin, which can happen when everything falls. 34 of the 66 altcoin season days here came while bitcoin was lower than 90 days earlier.
