The relative strength index comes from J. Welles Wilder Jr., who introduced it in his 1978 book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems. It splits the changes between closes into gains and losses, averages each over a number of periods, commonly 14, and turns the ratio of the two averages into a score from 0 to 100: RSI = 100 - 100 / (1 + average gain / average loss). TradingView's documentation sums up Wilder's levels: "According to Wilder, any number above 70 should be considered overbought and any number below 30 should be considered oversold."
This page uses Wilder's smoothing. The first averages are the plain mean of the first 14 changes, and each later average keeps 13 parts of the previous one and adds 1 part of the newest change. A weekly close is the Sunday daily close, the end of a Monday to Sunday week in UTC, and a monthly close is the last daily close of the month. Pick a coin, a timeframe, a range, the levels and the RSI length, point at the chart to read any close, and open the calculation below the tables to check the last value step by step.
On September 25, 2026, bitcoin closed at $84,029.10 and its daily RSI read 64.2. The weekly RSI for the week to September 20, 2026 was 58.7, or 61.2 with the September 25 close as the week's close so far. The monthly RSI for August 2026 was 51.0, and 53.5 for September so far. None of the three was above 70 or below 30.
The daily RSI was last above 70 on September 22, 2026, peaking at 73.8, and last below 30 in June 2026, when it fell to 15.5.
From November 28, 2018, the first day with a 14-day RSI in this data, the daily RSI was above 70 on 10.6% of days, in 66 separate runs, and below 30 on 4.2% of days, in 31 runs. Its highest reading was 89.2 on January 8, 2021 and its lowest 15.0 on March 12, 2020.
The slower timeframes are more selective. The weekly RSI went above 70 in 8 runs and below 30 only twice, in June 2022 and February 2026. The monthly RSI, available from January 2020, went above 70 in 5 runs and never closed a month below 30; its lowest was 40.5 in December 2022.
In this data a high RSI was more often a sign of strength than a warning. When the daily RSI first rose above 70, bitcoin was higher 90 days later 44 times out of 62, by a median of 20.4%. After the daily RSI first fell below 30, it was higher 90 days later 18 times out of 31, by a median of 4.5%. On the weekly RSI, bitcoin was higher 13 weeks after 6 of 8 runs above 70 began. The monthly chart was the exception: six months after each run of monthly closes above 70 began, bitcoin was higher in only 2 of 5 cases, and the median change was -3.8%.
These are price changes only, with no trades and no costs. A handful of weekly and monthly signals is too few to call a pattern, and the episode table in the tool lists every one so you can judge them yourself.
For the idea behind the indicator, what is the RSI indicator explains momentum, divergence and the 70 and 30 levels. The bitcoin 200 week moving average and the pi cycle top indicator apply two other long-term measures to the same bitcoin prices.
Educational, not financial advice. The RSI describes past price moves. It does not predict the next move or recommend buying or selling any coin.
At the last close in this data, September 25, 2026, the 14-day RSI was 64.2. The weekly RSI for the week to September 20 was 58.7 and the monthly RSI for August 2026 was 51.0. All three were between 30 and 70.
Wilder called readings above 70 overbought. In this data it was not a reliable top: after the daily RSI rose above 70, bitcoin was higher 90 days later in 44 of 62 cases.
Twice since 2019 in this data: in June 2022 and in February 2026. Its lowest weekly reading was 25.7, for the week to July 3, 2022.
The RSI of monthly closes, here the last daily close of each month. For August 2026 it was 51.0. Since January 2020 it has ranged from 40.5 to 93.0, the high in March 2021.
Each site uses its own exchange data, daily closing time and length of history, and some update unfinished weeks and months live. Small differences in any of them change the averages behind the RSI.
