How the Stochastic RSI is calculated

StockCharts describes it this way: "Developed by Tushar Chande and Stanley Kroll, StochRSI is an oscillator that measures the level of RSI relative to its high-low range over a set time period." The formula is "StochRSI = (RSI - Lowest Low RSI) / (Highest High RSI - Lowest Low RSI)", which runs from 0 to 1. This page shows it times 100.

The RSI underneath is J. Welles Wilder's 14-period RSI, done the StockCharts way: the first average gain and loss are simple 14-period averages, then each new average is the previous one times 13 plus the new value, divided by 14. The page's formulas reproduce the RSI and StochRSI values in StockCharts' example spreadsheets. Here %K is the 3-period simple average of StochRSI and %D the 3-period simple average of %K; for both lines, TradingView's help center says "3 is the default".

StockCharts sets the zones: "A move above .80 is considered overbought, while a move below .20 is considered oversold." On the 0 to 100 scale that is 80 and 20. A zone crossover on this page is %K crossing above %D with both lines below 20, or crossing below %D with both lines above 80.

Bitcoin's Stoch RSI now

At the last daily close in this data, September 26, 2026, bitcoin closed at $84,376.00. Its 14-day RSI was 64.96 and its Stoch RSI %K 65.21, below a %D of 69.02, in the neutral zone between 20 and 80. The latest zone crossover came on September 23, when %K crossed below %D above 80.

The longer charts point in different directions. In the week of September 14, the last full week in the data, the weekly %K stood at 93.92 and had just crossed below %D above 80. The monthly Stoch RSI for August 2026 was in the oversold zone, with %K at 13.37 and %D at 9.99: that month, %K crossed above %D below 20. That was bitcoin's sixth monthly crossover up below 20 since the first monthly %D in June 2021. Of the four that are at least a year old, two were followed by a higher price 12 months later (July 2022 and January 2023) and two by a lower one (September 2021 and March 2022).

What followed the crossovers

Since the first daily %D on December 15, 2018, bitcoin's Stoch RSI crossed up below 20 on 130 days and down above 80 on 128. Neither told much about the next three months. 90 days after an up crossover the price was higher 75 of 125 times, median +8.8%; after a down crossover, 71 of 123 times, median +9.5%. For comparison, 90 days after any day the price was higher 57.9% of the time, median +7.3%.

StockCharts calls StochRSI "like RSI on steroids", and the data shows why. Bitcoin's daily %K was above 80 on 27.5% of days and below 20 on 25.5%, while its RSI was above 70 on 10.7% of days and below 30 on 3.7%. More readings in the zones means more signals, and StockCharts adds that this brings "more good signals and more bad signals."

Three rules, tested with fees

The tests start with $10,000 on January 13, 2019 and trade at the next day's open with a 0.1% fee and 0.05% slippage per trade.

The other coins do not rescue the zone rule: it trailed buying and holding on all four. Holding while %K was above 50 finished ahead of buying and holding for ether, XRP and solana, but behind it for bitcoin. On weekly candles every rule trailed buying and holding on all four coins.

Using the Stoch RSI calculator

Paste closing prices, oldest first, and the calculator returns RSI, StochRSI, %K and %D for the last 15 prices. With the standard settings it needs 32 prices for the first %D: 15 for the first RSI, 13 more for StochRSI and 4 for the two averages. Because RSI carries its whole past, short lists give slightly different values: from bitcoin's last 60 daily closes %K comes out 0.06 lower than on the chart above, and from the last 200 the two agree to four decimals.

Why other charts can show other values

For the RSI itself, see the bitcoin RSI page and what is the RSI indicator. The bitcoin MACD page measures momentum with moving averages instead.

Educational, not financial advice. The Stochastic RSI describes how past prices moved. It does not predict the next move or recommend buying or selling any coin.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is bitcoin's Stoch RSI today?

At the last daily close in this data, September 26, 2026, bitcoin's Stoch RSI (14, 14, 3, 3) had %K at 65.21 and %D at 69.02, in the neutral zone. The weekly %K was 93.92 in the week of September 14, 2026, and the monthly %K for August 2026 was 13.37.

How do you calculate the Stochastic RSI?

Calculate the 14-period RSI, then StochRSI = (RSI - lowest RSI of the last 14) / (highest RSI of the last 14 - lowest RSI), times 100. %K is the 3-period average of StochRSI and %D the 3-period average of %K. The calculator on this page shows every column.

What do %K and %D mean in Stoch RSI?

%K is the smoothed StochRSI line and %D a slower average of %K. TradingView calls identifying crossovers and overbought or oversold conditions the indicator's primary function. On this page a crossover counts when %K crosses above %D with both lines below 20, or below %D with both lines above 80.

Is a Stoch RSI crossover a good buy signal for bitcoin?

Not on its own in this data. 90 days after a daily crossover up below 20, bitcoin was higher 75 of 125 times, about as often as after any day. Trading the zone crossovers with fees turned $10,000 into $25,150.18 from January 2019, against $232,834.67 for buying and holding.

What is the difference between RSI and Stoch RSI?

RSI compares recent gains with recent losses. Stoch RSI shows where RSI sits in its own recent range, which StockCharts calls an indicator of an indicator. It reaches its extremes far more often: bitcoin's daily %K was above 80 or below 20 on about half of all days, its RSI above 70 or below 30 on about one day in seven.
